FC 26 Career Mode Wonderkids: Best Young Players With 85+ Potential (And Bargain Hidden Gems Under 5M)
I've simmed about fifteen Career Mode seasons across different clubs testing which wonderkids actually develop versus which ones have fake stats on paper. The dynamic potential system makes it hard to predict growth — a player who reaches 92 at one club might stall at 85 at another depending on form and playtime. Here's what I found across multiple saves.
The Top 20 Wonderkids By Position
Goalkeepers
Guillaume Restes (Toulouse, 72 OVR, 87 POT): The best young keeper in the game for the price. Starts at 72, grows to 87 reliably by season 3. Reflexes and diving are his standout stats. Costs about 15M in season 1, which is cheap for a keeper who will last you a decade.
Bart Verbruggen (Brighton, 77 OVR, 85 POT): Higher starting rating but lower ceiling than Restes. If you need someone who starts immediately rather than a project, Verbruggen is the pick. Already has good kicking which matters if you play out from the back.
Dennis Seimen (Stuttgart, 66 OVR, 84 POT): The budget option. Starts in the 60s but grows fast with game time. Perfect for lower-league careers or if you need a future starter on a tiny budget. Can be signed for under 3M in season 1.
Center Backs
Antonio Silva (Benfica, 79 OVR, 88 POT): The best young CB in the game bar none. Strong, fast, good on the ball. Costs about 45M which is the only downside. But he's a day-one starter for any team outside the top 10 clubs.
Jorrel Hato (Ajax, 76 OVR, 87 POT): Left-footed CB who can also play left back. His versatility alone makes him worth the 25M price tag. Develops into a top-tier ball-playing defender by season 3.
Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona, 73 OVR, 86 POT): Barcelona won't sell him cheap but if you can get him for under 30M, do it. His passing stats are already elite at 73 OVR. With dynamic potential he can hit 90.
Ousmane Diomande (Sporting CP, 78 OVR, 85 POT): Physically dominant at 6'3" with pace. The kind of CB who wins every header and bullies strikers off the ball. Less technical than Silva or Hato but if you want a destroyer, Diomande is your guy.
Fullbacks
Rico Lewis (Man City, 76 OVR, 86 POT): Can play either fullback position and also midfield. The definition of a Pep player — technically excellent, can invert into midfield, and his passing range is absurd for a defender.
Alejandro Balde (Barcelona, 81 OVR, 88 POT): The highest-rated young fullback and worth every penny. Pace, dribbling, crossing. Everything you want in an attacking fullback. Release clause is around 80M which is steep but you're buying a left back for a decade.
Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth, 76 OVR, 84 POT): Cheaper than Balde with similar attributes. Aggressive, loves to get forward, and his crossing is consistently dangerous. Can be signed for about 25M.
Central Midfielders
Warren Zaire-Emery (PSG, 79 OVR, 89 POT): The best young midfielder in the game. Box-to-box, can do everything. PSG won't sell him for less than 70M but he's worth it. I've had him reach 93 OVR by season 5 with consistent game time and good form.
Joao Neves (PSG, 79 OVR, 88 POT): More of a deep-lying playmaker than Zaire-Emery. His passing and vision develop into elite territory. Works best as a single pivot in a 4-3-3 or the deeper midfielder in a double pivot.
Kobbie Mainoo (Man United, 78 OVR, 87 POT): The most well-rounded of the young midfielders. Can play CM, CDM, or CAM. His dribbling and composure stats are already great. United rarely sells but if they do, buy him immediately.
Gavi (Barcelona, 83 OVR, 90 POT): Technically the highest-potential young midfielder but also the hardest to sign. Barcelona won't negotiate and his release clause is astronomical. Not realistic for most careers but included for completeness.
Wingers
Lamine Yamal (Barcelona, 81 OVR, 94 POT): The highest potential player in the entire game. Starts at 81 at age 17. By season 4 he's the best player in the world. Barcelona will never sell him and his release clause is over 200M. Again, not realistic for most clubs.
Estevao (Palmeiras, 74 OVR, 88 POT): The affordable version of Yamal. Left-footed right winger who cuts inside and scores. Palmeiras sells for about 20M. By season 2 he's starting quality and by season 4 he's elite.
Endrick (Real Madrid, 77 OVR, 88 POT): Can play striker or right wing. Pace and finishing are his standout attributes. Madrid rarely plays him in season 1 so you might be able to loan him with an option to buy.
Strikers
Endrick (Real Madrid, 77 OVR, 88 POT): Already mentioned but worth putting here too. His best position is striker. Clinical finisher with 90+ pace after a season of development.
Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig, 78 OVR, 86 POT): 6'5" with pace. The ultimate physical striker prospect. Wins headers, holds up play, and his shooting is surprisingly good for his size. Costs about 40M.
Evan Ferguson (Brighton, 74 OVR, 85 POT): Traditional number 9. Strong, good in the air, and his finishing develops into the high 80s. Cheaper than Sesko at about 25M.
The Hidden Gems Nobody Mentions
These are the players I found by accident. They develop way beyond what their potential suggests because of how dynamic potential interacts with their starting attributes.
Assane Diao (Real Betis, 72 OVR, 84 POT): Listed potential is 84 but I've had him reach 89. He's a right winger with 5-star skill moves and his dribbling growth is absurd. Costs under 15M. The key is giving him consistent game time in his first two seasons — his form shoots up and dynamic potential pushes him past his listed ceiling.
Johan Bakayoko (PSV, 78 OVR, 85 POT): PSV always sells for around 30M. Right winger with blistering pace and 4-star weak foot. His crossing and finishing develop evenly so he's effective cutting inside or staying wide. In my longest save he reached 90 OVR.
Bilal El Khannouss (Genk, 72 OVR, 84 POT): The best budget CAM in the game. Starts at 72 but his technical attributes — dribbling, passing, vision — are already in the high 70s. Costs about 10M. By season 2 he's starting for any mid-table Premier League side.
Arda Guler (Real Madrid, 78 OVR, 88 POT): You know about him but he's still underpriced for what you get. Madrid doesn't play him much in season 1 so he's sometimes transfer listed. If you see him available for under 35M, that's a steal for a future 90-rated CAM.
Budget Wonderkids Under 5 Million
For lower-league careers or teams with tiny budgets:
Archie Gray (Spurs, 70 OVR, 84 POT): Utility player who can play CM, CDM, or RB. Spurs often loan him out in season 1. Loan-to-buy deals work well here.
Marcos Leonardo (Benfica, 75 OVR, 84 POT): Brazilian striker who Benfica somehow always sells for under 15M. His finishing is already in the 80s. Perfect for a mid-table team that needs goals now, not in three seasons.
Semih Kilicsoy (Besiktas, 74 OVR, 85 POT): Left-footed striker who can also play on the wing. Rapid, good dribbler, and Besiktas sells for 8-12M. One of the best value signings in the game.
Mario Stroeykens (Anderlecht, 70 OVR, 82 POT): CAM who plays above his rating. His long shots stat is randomly high for a 70-rated player. Costs about 4M. Grows into an 82-85 rated player with consistent minutes.
Scouting Instructions For Finding Your Own Wonderkids
If you want to find your own gems instead of following a list, set your youth scouts to these parameters:
For attackers: Pace 80+, Dribbling 75+, Age 16-21. Send scouts to Brazil, Argentina, France, and the Netherlands. Brazil consistently produces the best attackers in the game.
For midfielders: Passing 75+, Composure 70+, Age 16-21. Scout Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Belgium. Spanish and Portuguese midfielders tend to have the best technical attributes.
For defenders: Standing Tackle 75+, Pace 75+, Age 16-22. Scout France, Italy, England, and Senegal. French academies produce the most complete defenders.
For goalkeepers: Reflexes 75+, Diving 75+, Age 17-23. Scout Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. German keepers consistently have the best distribution stats.
Dynamic Potential Cheat Sheet
Dynamic potential means a player's potential can go up or down based on performance. Here's what I've figured out after testing:
A player needs to play at least 60% of available minutes to trigger positive dynamic potential growth. Rotation players who start every other game don't get the boost. Starters do.
Match rating matters more than goals or assists. A 7.5 average over a season will increase potential by 2-3 points. A 6.5 average will decrease it by 1-2. So subbing a young player in for 15 minutes at the end of a game where he gets a 6.3 actually hurts his development. Better to either start him or not play him at all.
Loan spells only help if the player actually plays. Loaning a wonderkid to a club where he sits on the bench is worse than keeping him as a rotation player on your own team. Check the loan club's squad before accepting the loan — does their starter in his position have a higher rating? If yes, your player won't play and won't develop.
The development plan you choose (balanced, explosive, etc.) affects which attributes grow fastest. Balanced is the safest. Explosive focuses on physical attributes which is great for wingers and fullbacks. Target Man focuses on strength and heading for strikers. Don't set a center back to Explosive — you'll get a fast defender who can't tackle.
Youth Academy tip: Promote academy players to the first team as soon as they reach 60 OVR. Keeping them in the academy past that point slows their growth. Once promoted, either start them in cup games or loan them to a league where they'll actually play.
