FC 26 Set Pieces & Free Kicks Guide 2026: How to Actually Score From Dead Balls

2026-06-26·Tips & Tricks

Corners in FC 26 are not random. There is a system. If you know it, you'll score 8-12 corner goals per season across all competitions. If you don't, you'll score maybe 2. Same players, same formation, same difficulty. The difference is entirely in the setup.

Free kicks: the new aiming system explained (without the tutorial fluff)

FC 26 completely overhauled free kicks. The old system (right stick to aim, power bar for strength) is gone. The new system uses a target reticle that you position with the left stick, then a timing-based strike with the right stick.

Here's what the game doesn't tell you: the reticle position matters less than the strike timing. A perfectly timed strike aimed 2 meters off-target will still go in because the player's curve stat bends it back. A poorly timed strike aimed perfectly at the top corner will sail 5 meters over. The green timing window is your actual target, not the reticle.

The timing window is tighter than penalties. You need to hit the right stick forward when the player's plant foot hits the ground. This is roughly 0.3 seconds after you release the power bar. The visual cue is the player's non-kicking foot — the moment it touches the grass, flick the right stick forward. Not before, not after.

Best free kick takers for each range:

  • 18-22 yards (close): Players with high Curve and Shot Power, not Free Kick Accuracy. The ball needs to get over the wall and dip quickly. James Ward-Prowse (93 FKA but more importantly 89 Curve), Lionel Messi (94 Curve), Paulo Dybala (90 Curve).
  • 23-27 yards (medium): Free Kick Accuracy is the primary stat now. The wall is far enough that you can aim for corners without needing extreme curve. Trent Alexander-Arnold (90 FKA), Bruno Fernandes (91 FKA), Hakan Calhanoglu (89 FKA).
  • 28+ yards (long): Shot Power beats everything. You're trying to blast it with enough speed that the keeper can't react. Cristiano Ronaldo (92 Shot Power), Kevin De Bruyne (91 Shot Power), Federico Valverde (90 Shot Power).

Corners that actually result in goals

The front-post near-post meta from FC 25 still works but the timing changed. In FC 25, you put the ball exactly on the penalty spot and the AI would position a player perfectly. In FC 26, you need to aim the cross slightly closer to the byline — about 2 meters from the goal line and 6 meters from the near post. This creates a low-driven cross that your near-post runner heads downward into the ground, which bounces over the keeper.

Setup: go to Squad → Tactics → Set Pieces → Corners. Set "Near Post Run" as the primary target. Put your best header of the ball (not tallest — highest Heading Accuracy stat) in the near post runner position. Put your tallest player at the far post as a decoy. Put a player with high Long Shots on the edge of the box for knockdowns.

Delivery: 3.5 bars of power, aim slightly toward the byline from the default position, use inswinging delivery (left footer from right corner, right footer from left corner). The inswing is crucial — outswinging corners get cleared by the first defender 80% of the time.

When the defense adjusts (usually after 2-3 corner goals), they'll send an extra defender to mark your near post runner. This is when you switch to the edge-of-the-box runner. Short corner → lay off → edge of box shot. Most players don't adjust their corner defense, so this works against the AI and about 70% of online opponents.

Penalties: more than just guessing a side

The penalty system in FC 26 has a composure mechanic that isn't explained anywhere. Your player's Composure stat affects the size of the green timing window. A player with 92 Composure (Harry Kane) has a timing window roughly twice as large as a player with 72 Composure. This means you can miss a penalty with perfect timing if the player's Composure is too low and the game decides they "felt the pressure."

Keepers also have a new penalty stat: Penalty Reflexes. It's hidden — not shown on the card — but it governs how fast the keeper dives after you choose a direction. Ederson has the highest in the game. If you're facing Ederson in a penalty shootout, aim for the top corners. He'll reach low shots.

Stutter-step penalties got nerfed. In FC 25 you could stutter and the keeper always dove early. In FC 26, keepers wait longer. If you stutter, the keeper will plant their feet and wait for you to finish the run-up. Just pick a side and shoot. The meta is power shot to the top corner. If the keeper guesses right, they still might not reach it.

The indirect free kick that nobody uses

Inside the box, indirect free kicks happen more often in FC 26 than any previous year — usually from a back-pass the keeper picks up. The wall is 10 yards away, which means it's on the goal line. This is basically a penalty from a different angle.

Lay off to a second runner with high Shot Power and aim for the gap in the wall. The wall on an indirect free kick is 6 players max (vs 5 on a direct free kick), but they're standing on the goal line so there are gaps between their heads and the crossbar. Aim between the third and fourth player in the wall. 3 bars of power. It goes in way more often than it should.

Corner counter-attacks (defending corners)

If you leave your fastest player forward during opponent corners, you will score breakaway goals. Set your fastest winger to "Stay Forward" in the corner defense settings. When you clear the ball, immediately trigger a through ball toward the sideline, then switch to the winger and sprint. The opponent's corner setup leaves 1-2 defenders back, and your winger is already behind the halfway line before their defenders start running back.

Don't bring everyone back for corners. The "everyone defends" approach just means you have 11 players in the box, the ball gets cleared to the edge where the opponent picks it up, and you face a second wave of attack. Leave one fast player up. Always.

Set piece tactical presets worth saving

Create three corner presets and switch between them mid-match: 1) Near Post (primary), 2) Edge of Box (when they adjust to near post), 3) Short Corner Routine (when neither is working). The AI doesn't adapt within a single match — it only adjusts at halftime. You can score 3 near-post corners in the first 45 minutes before the AI adjusts.

For free kicks at the edge of the box (19-21 yards), save a preset with a second kick taker. Position the first taker over the ball, call the second taker, touch the ball sideways with the first taker, and the second taker has an unobstructed line to goal because the wall shifts to cover the first taker's position. This is a real-life routine that works in FC 26 because the wall AI can't process the second runner fast enough.
